Ripples radar: Wooden-slatted panelling

Wooden panelling has been big in the interiors world for some time but the trend is now moving into bathrooms. Here, Leanne Robey, Senior Designer from Ripples Newbury explores the trend and how it can be implemented within a bathroom setting.

Common misconceptions

Wooden panelling has historically been seen in living spaces within the home, however it’s a great option for those wanting to add flair and interest to their bathroom. There are some common misconceptions about using wooden panelling in bathrooms, mainly that it’s not suitable for wet and humid conditions, however recent developments from manufacturers means there are now a plethora of fully waterproof options available, specifically designed for use within the bathroom. These panels are made from a purpose-built wood effect material which gives the look and depth of slatted wooden panelling, but with all the practicalities of a fully waterproofed solution. Perfect for high-humidity areas, the panelling is made from recyclable materials and has a smooth wipeable finish which is easy to clean and maintain.

Installation

Another common misconception of wooden panelling in bathrooms is that it’s difficult to install, however this is not the case. Available in a range of tongue and groove finishes, panelling can be easily installed using screws or even adhesive, for a simple yet highly impactful finish. To install, all you have to do is measure your space, calculate how many panels you need, cut the panels to size and attach to the wall using grab adhesive. You can then add an end cap or top trim to add finesse to the finish.

Adding interest

Wooden panelling works particularly well within bathrooms as its texture and look give a spa-like feeling, helping to evoke a sense of comfort and calm. Opting for panelling is also great way of adding interest to a bathroom space, without having to commit to a patterned tile which can easily date and is difficult and often costly to change. Wooden panelling has a timeless appeal, and with options from natural oak to walnut and black in an array of styles, there’s something to suit every scheme.

Style tip: Lay chequerboard tiles in interesting configurations for a modern take on the look.

Pairing with colour

When pairing wooden panelling with other colours and finishes, it’s a good idea to use the panelling as your ‘neutral’ base and layer up other textures and tones for a finished look. Colours such as warm buttery yellows, pale pinks, terracottas and blues work really well against the wood finish and by mixing in tones of gold through brassware and accessories, you can elevate the overall look to create a luxe, hotel-esque space.
